Nailsea 2nd XI at the Avon Hockey Tournament - April 2012

Nailsea 2nd XI finished runners-up behind Avonmouth in the Avon Hockey Tournament at Clifton College on Saturday. Nailseas’ first of five games was against the tournament winners and they went down 1-0. In the damp conditions Nailsea took too long to settle in and suffered because of it.

In the second game v North Somerset Nailsea were more alert and played with an urgency missing earlier.  Sarah Billington was dominant in forcing the attack and was unlucky not to score; however, she was instrumental when Jen Atherton finally scored the only goal of this game.
Against Knowle the young Nailsea side took control and it was the lively Jen Atherton who put Nailsea ahead. Jess Atkinson added a second with a reverse stick sweep soon after. Nailsea’s defence was tight and Knowle were unable to reply.
Game four v Clevedon was taken by Nailsea 4-0. With an improvement in the weather conditions Nailsea settled quickly and soon the attack were on fire. Jo Faiers opened the scoring with a reflex reverse strike.  Alice Keyworth added a second with a similar stroke but Nailsea’s third by Jess Atkinson, was a solid strike catching the keeper wrong footed. A positive drive following a forceful attack saw Jo Faiers claim her second and finished this match 4-0.

Nailsea’s fifth and final game of the tournament was against Friends Life and saw Left back Zoe Roberts score her first goal of the season with a stinging drive from the top of the D.  Friends Life pulled back level again but a sterling attack resulted in Nailsea being awarded a penalty but with no time left to take it Nailsea had to be content with a 1-1 drawn game.

Having lost to Avonmouth in the first game Nailsea finished as very credible runners-up. Well done to all who took part.
